When school English becomes more demanding

Many children are comfortable using English in familiar situations. They can follow routines, join conversations and read familiar texts aloud.

As schoolwork becomes more academic, the language demands become more complex.

Reading requires children to handle longer texts, understand unfamiliar vocabulary, identify key information and explain answers with evidence.

Writing asks children to organise ideas clearly across sentences and paragraphs, using grammar, vocabulary and punctuation with increasing control.

Class discussion requires children to explain ideas clearly, support their answers and respond thoughtfully to others.

As these expectations increase, parents may notice that their child understands more than they can express clearly in English. This may appear in brief reading responses, writing that lacks structure or spoken answers that need more detail and precision.

Support starts with the right focus

BloomStone turns that uncertainty into a clear teaching focus: what is already secure, what needs strengthening and what should be taught first.

What BloomStone Strengthens

Academic English is not one skill. BloomStone develops the connected language children need to read, write and contribute to academic discussions at a higher level.

Reading with depth

Children strengthen reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, interpretation and evidence-based responses, so they can engage more fully with richer texts.

Writing with control

Children develop sentence accuracy, grammar, vocabulary choice, punctuation, paragraph structure and editing, so written work becomes clearer, more precise and better organised.

Explaining with clarity

Children develop the language for clear spoken explanations, reasoned answers and thoughtful class discussion, so they can express ideas with greater clarity.

The right blend of teaching expertise

BloomStone Tutors began their journey after teaching at one of the world’s leading international schools, Dulwich College Beijing. The founder, Ben Smith, is a UK-trained primary teacher with over 12 years’ experience working in a range of teaching and leadership roles across UK primary schools, international primary schools and English as an additional language learning classrooms.

With a First-class degree in Primary Education, a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status, and a CELTA qualification, Ben has consistently helped children make excellent progress in English by identifying each child’s next steps and teaching with structure, precision and high expectations.

BloomStone Tutors was created for children who have strong ideas, but need more precise academic English to show those ideas fully in reading, writing and class discussion.
